HIRES Extracted Spectra Visualization

The Keck Observatory Archive provides an interactive plot and table tool for users to visualize the extracted spectra. The tool is designed to probe the data quantitatively, but not for science quality analysis. For more information about the extracted spectra products, please refer to About HIRES Extracted Spectra.

Note: The tool is optimized for Firefox and Safari does not work well with IE.

Overview:

The tool shows a plot of flux vs. wavelength from the extracted spectral order flux data table for the CCD and order that is selected by the user. The user can: probe data points and ranges, change plot parameters (including changing the data for the X-axis and Y-axis), and select other orders (up to 10) to overplot over the initial plot.

Accessing the Visualization Tool:

From the Search Results page, the user can select the Extracted Quicklook link (where available for a HIRES KOAID.)

Extracted link

On the Extracted Browse Spectra page, there are 'Plot' buttons for each order of the spectra located in the 'Grade' field for each CCD for which the browse product is available. Click the 'Plot' button to see the interactive spectral plot.

Plot Link

Plot Window

Selecting the plot link will launch the plot tool. The initial page contains: a plot of Flux vs. wavelength, a reference plot, control buttons, and plot coordinate feedback. You can scroll or resize the window to see the full plot window if needed by your browser. The plot features are:

  • Zoom In - Click to zoom into the plot.
  • Zoom Out - Click to zoom out of the plot.
  • Reset Zoom - Resets to the original zoom factor.
  • Show Table - Launches a separate window to display the data table.
  • Plot Controls - Launches a separate window to display the controls to change the plotting parameters.
  • Plot Coordinate Feedback On/Off - 'On' shows real time plot coordinates in the text area below 'Plot Coordinate Feedback' as you move your mouse over the plot.
  • Clicking a point on the plot - Highlights the point with a circle and the text area below 'Plot Coordinate Feedback' will show the coordinate values and highlights the relavant row in the table and bring that table forward if there are multiple plots (if the table window is open.)
  • Selecting a zoom region - Place the cursor in the plot and click and pull diagonally to form a rectangular region. The plot will zoom to that area and updates the Xmin/Xmax and Ymin/Ymax values in the Plot Controls (if the plot controls window is open.) Clicking Reset Zoom will return the plot to the original state.

Plot Controls

Selecting Plot Controls from the main plot window will launch a separate window showing the current plot paramters. The 'Plot Control' window contains two tabs: 'Plot Controls' and 'Overplot Fields'.

  • User can modify the following plot controls:
    • X-axis and Y-axis data selection
    • Plot window width, height, and background color
    • Scale and scaling type
    • Point style, color, and size
    • Line style, color, and width
  • Notes:
    • The parameters in the asterisk (*) fields do not apply to the over plots. Overplot parameters should be set with the 'Overplot Fields' interface.
    • The tick marks on the Log scale plot only appear on the integer number (i.e. 10, 100 etc.). If the plot range is less than one order of magnitude, there might be no tick mark at all.

  • Overplot Fields:
    • Users can choose to display up to 10 additional overplots from different orders of the same CCD. Note: scaling will be set by the first plot.
    • X-axis and Y-axis data selection
    • Point style, color, and size
    • Line style, color, and width

Show Table

Selecting Show Table from the main plot window will launch a separate window showing the table of the data. The table display has the following features:

  • Selecting a point in the plot will highlight that row in the table.
  • Selecting a row in the table will draw a circle around the plot point in the graph.
  • Tabs showing the data for each spectra plotted. Clicking on a tab will bring that table forward.
  • The total number of records available is shown in the lower left corner.
  • A reset button in the lower right corner returns the table to the original state after a sort, filter, column resize, or column shift.
  • Clicking on a column header will sort the table by that column.
  • Entering a number or number range in the textbox under the column header will filter the table by that criteria (x, >x, <=x, etc. where x is a number)
  • Positioning the mouse on a vertical bar on the column header will change the cursor to an arrow and you can resize the column width.
  • Clicking on the left vertical bar of a column header will change the cursor to vertical red bars and you can move the column to a new location.
  • Scrolling right/left scrolls columns (if window is smaller than full table width.)
  • Scrolling up/down scrolls rows. The lower left corner shows the internal row number of the top row and total number of records. Note: the internal row count starts with '0' so it will be one less that rowid shown

Note: left/right scrollbars, up/down scrollbars, and Reset button not shown in screen shot image below.
