LRIS Modes and Instrument Properties

Modes

LRIS has two separate cameras, a blue side and a red side. These cameras can be operated simultaneously, though both must be operated using the same basic mode:

  • Optical imaging
  • Low-dispersion spectroscopy (R=300-5000)

Table 1 provides a summary of these modes, options, and features of LRIS.

Table1: Modes

Spectroscopy or Imaging Mode Slits/FOV
Low Resolution Spectroscopy long slit 0.7", 1.0", 1.5". 8.7" widths, all 3' long
  multi-slit 4'x8' field, up to 30-40 objects, 0.7"-1.4" slits milled on-site
  polarimetry 1.0" and 1.5"
Optical Imaging imaging 6'x8' FOV
  polarimetry 25"x25" FOV

Instrument Properties

LRIS employs a selection of fixed slit widths that are set before the dichroic. Table 2 gives a summary of LRIS's properties and design parameters. For more details, see LRIS Instrument and Data Format
